With public submissions on the two Development Applications for plastic grass fields at Callan Park set to close on Monday 9 February, opponents are rallying at Callan Park, Saturday 7 February.
The rally will be held near the Cecily Street gates at 11am.
Speakers will include
Kobi Shetty, MP for Balmain
Mark Zihrul, researcher Total Environment Centre
Councillor Liz Atkins, Inner West Council
Cat Carver, Natural Turf Alliance
John Stamolis, statistician & former independent Councillor
Terry Kelly, Iron Cove Cricketers
Ana Norte, Callan Park Dog Lovers
The rally is hosted by Friends of Callan Park. It will be a last chance for residents to hear the case for best practice natural turf rather than toxic synthetic grass for the Callan Park fields.
After public submissions close the following Monday, the DAs (and accompanying documentation and reports) will go to the Heritage Council and the Inner West Planning Panel.
Over 500 submissions have already been lodged.
The Development Applications are for what is known as “integrated development” because under the Callan Park (Special Provisions) Act 2002 they require initial approval from the Heritage Council. Only if they receive that, would they proceed to the final consent authority, the Inner West Local Planning Panel.
The DAs have been submitted by the Inner West Council itself rather than the Greater Sydney Parklands Trust which is now the manager and owner of the parklands at Callan Park. The DAs are for Waterfront Oval and Balmain Road Field which the Council leases from the GSP.
