Meeting with Frank Sartor

Frank Sartor has called to arrange a meeting. It was quite a surprise as FS has not replied to our correspondence or earlier emails over the past 6 months. I had asked for a meeting on Feb 26 in my last email but he declined saying ‘you’ll have enough fun on that day without seeing me’ but he was keen to fit us in beforehand. The points I recall him saying…

1. the hospital closing was not his but the govt’s – taken and retaken,

2. the govt wants a resolution on Callan Park … it has gone on too long .. it cannot wait another four years,

3. I made it quite clear that the uni proposal was unacceptable, over the top, too much etc He didn’t appear to be keen to argue the contrary,

4. he was annoyed that we had personalised the campaign … read out our latest leaflet to me as an example …

5. I batted back his responsibility for what’s happening which he didn’t argue over …

6. He did stick to his contention that FOCP are just interested in endless campaigning and not solutions,

7. He went on at great length about the dangers of ideology – to which i agreed and tried to bring him back to the topic, only to have him recount a conversation with the president of the World Bank the point of which was that he (and they) don’t getup in the morning thinking “how can we ruin Callan Park” (or the world) – to which I agreed but that could be the consequence of their actions – citing the MOU and the brief to the consultants (in his case) and changes to the Act.

8. He said that was him being practical … and as for the changes to the Act he said that came late in the day when he saw what the consultants were suggesting and that he had to indicate “that the govt would contemplate changes to the Act” – and he went on to add how difficult the Act was.

So it’s a mystery … we will I suspect exchange positions … although perhaps we could suggest a working party of local-state-federal reps to work up alternative proposals that keep Callan Park with its current mix … did vaguely suggest something along those lines … to which he said that finding alien life forms on the moon was more likely than getting agreement in Leichhardt Municipality …

Anyway, for whatever reason, he is meeting us …
